VOLUNTEERISM AND PHILATROPY AT LAKE BUNYONYI Transforming lives through responsible tourism – Join the club!
Bunyonyi Safaris Resort supports local initiatives to reduce poverty and protect the environment through educational projects and household income generating activities around lake Bunyonyi. This area is prone to environmental degradation due to high population density on fragile slopes.
Our support is given through BSR Foundation through two institutions namely Bufuka Orphanage and Lake Bunyonyi Christian Community Vocational Secondary School (BCVS). Volunteers and donors automatically become members of BSR Club and are given special sourveniers. They are also invited to attend special occasions such as celebrating the success of different aspects of the projects. Our vision is to create environmentally friendly and sustainable income generating activities for the benefit of the local community and the donors. Our objective is to build a foundation upon which profitable ventures can be established for the benefit of the recipient and the donor so as to minimise donor dependency. Our projects are as follows:
1. BUFUKA ORPHANAGE
Due to the HIV/AIDS Pandemic that hit the area, plus water accidents, widows and orphans have increased in the area. Some of them are completely helpless and need support.
We have come up with a number of projects in which one can participate in and help support these vulnerable people through the following;
A. Education
For only USD 1000 you can educate a child from senior 1 to senior 4 for the secondary school education. With a few more USD, such as usd 200 you can cater for her stationary and clothing. Education is the best gift to any child.
B. Household Income
The orphaned children stay with a single parent or with relatives. With only USD 50 you can donate a goat, a pig or chicken to one of the orphaned families. One of the off springs will be given to another needy family and hence create a cycle of sustainability. Similar projects include donation of chicken, rabbits and hybrid seeds for vegetable growing. With only USD 100 you can start a cycle of sustainable projects within the local community. Other donotions can include fertilizers and other agricultural inputs and implements.
C. Houses & promotion of Community Tourism.
Orphans can also be supported by contributing towards the construction of decent houses for them. A simple 3 bed roomed house with an outside kitchen, food store, bathrooms and toilet can cost about USD 6000. Labor and bricks are provided by the family. Volunteers can also help construct such houses and draw plans for them. Donors can enjoy a stay at the house and participate in the local way of life of the family. The family will be trained on how to offer hospitality services and accommodation to tourists wishing to stay locally, hence generating an income.
D. Donations
Donations can also be done in form of books, clothes, beddings and computers, life jackets, money for construction of canoes, boats and other items of value are welcome. Other donations are in form of HIV/AIDS Testing equipments, time and labour to the affected families. Donations can also be in form of ARVS to the affected people who can’t afford buying them in clinics.
E. Volunteerism
Volunteers are needed to provide training in practical skills, life saving skills and swimming. Many people drown in the lake Bunyonyi due to lack of swimming skills. Volunteers are also needed for HIV/AIDS Education and Awareness Campaigns. Volunteers are called in to participate in community counseling and guidance using mobile clinics and demonstration charts. There is also need to educate and provide educational materials (Literature) about HIV/AIDS.
2. LAKE BUNYONYI CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY VOCATIONAL SECONDARY SCHOOL (BCVS)
Bunyonyi Safaris Ltd also supports BCVS in her efforts to impart practical skills to the youth. The school now has more than 300 students. The school needs volunteers and donations in the following aspects:
